 2016 Preview

Jacksonville Christian completed the 2015 season with a 4-5 record. Last year Jacksonville Christian just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region seven with a 2-4 region record.

The Thunder have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2016.

Jacksonville Christian had a very good offense last year, scoring 33.2 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 37.7 points per game.

Since 2010, Jacksonville Christian has gone a combined 25-36. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 1A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Jacksonville Christian has managed to compile a record of 118-119. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 1A and 182nd in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2010.

The Thunder are led by head coach Tommy Miller who is entering his twenty-fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 116-111 over the past twenty-four seasons at Jacksonville Christian. Under his direction the Thunder have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Miller.

Coach Miller's overall record as a head football coach in thirty season stands at 138-150 (47.9%). His 138 wins rank 33rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Miller's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship.

The Jacksonville Christian Thunder will play in Class 1A region six during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Thunder remain in 1A but move from region seven over to region six.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Thunder could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season. Jacksonville Christian came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. Jacksonville Christian simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 66 students, the Thunder are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful.

The Thunder open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Donoho on Friday, August 19 at Tommy Miller Field. Last year the Donoho Falcons finished with an overall record of 3-6 and in sixth place in Class 1A region five. The Falcons ended last season on a positive note with a win over Coosa Christian by a score of 28-6 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Jacksonville Christian and Donoho have met a total of 9 times on the football field. The Thunder have a 1-8-0 record against the Falcons. They last met in 2013 with Donoho winning by a score of 55-33.
